Initial thoughts: On the whole, I enjoyed reading Eyes Like Mine. I don't read a lot of thrillers but this one interested me because it's written by a WOC. As much I love reading books with ethnically diverse characters and often seek them out, I've never read a mystery or thriller novel with a multiracial protagonist. I'm glad Eyes Like Mine changed that.
Another reason I was interested in this book was that the premise reminded me a little bit of a favourite TV show of mine: Frequency. It was about a detective who tried to save her father’s as well as her mother's lives.
Eyes Like Mine is about a PI who tries to find her missing daughter, which thus also brings family and mystery together. Well, except that Nora had given up her daughter for adoption and had no previous relationship. That gave it a very different sort of dynamic. Still, stakes are higher if there's a deeper personal attachment to the case.
I liked how these two element that I looked forward to played out, although somehow, the parts about the chase, solving mysteries and such didn't engage me as much as I'd hoped. Half the time, I didn't feel the urgency and the threat of the abduction. It's only towards the end when people's lives were evidently on the line, that I wondered how things would work out.
