This guide to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands completes the series of regional guides to Italy. Although the general organization of the book is informal, the specific places are dealt with in detail, offering walking tours that take readers around the major sites and through the finest countryside. In most cases, these walks are designed to last two hours, but tours of the major cities, such as Palermo, Catania and Syracuse, take a little longer. The guide contains a selection of some 30 cities, towns and nature reserves, arranged in geographic "constellations". At the end of each chapter are suggestions on how to get around, where to stay and eat, and what to see.
This title covers Venice and the major centres of northeasten Italy - the wealthiest region of the country and the fastest growing industrial district. It has become one of Europe's most successful "post-industrial" experiments; a fascinating place to visit, but also a wonderful place to live. Centres covered include (as well as Venice) Trieste, Udine, the Dolomiti Bellunesi Nature Reserve, Padua, Vicenze, Verona, Lake Garda, Trento and Bolzano. The guide offers a selection of 30 cities, towns and varied region. Venice is most thoroughly explored, but is also the starting point for excursions to the east, south, north and west. Written in a relaxed manner, this guide aims to be an entertaining companion to the region.
