Two women forge a friendship during World War II through their letters to each other, allowing them to survive the loneliness and uncertainty of waiting on the home front and giving them the courage to face the battles raging in their very own backyards.
From Glory's letters about her young children and her experiences with temptation while her husband is serving their country to Rita's letters detailing how she fears for her husband and grown son as they both fight and as she finds out that he son left behind a lonely girl who Rita has a hard time letting in, I had chills throughout the whole book. I cried, I laughed, I related so well to women of another era as they wrote their deepest fears to one another, some coming true and others not. It made me miss the days of the actual letter, the crisp paper and fancy stationary and actually waiting and anticipating the arrival rather than the instant messages of today.
This book was magical and one of those books you think about even when you are not reading it and one that follows you long after the last page was read.
