Just a stone's throw from London lies the manor house of the illustrious Phantomhive earldom, its master one Ciel Phantomhive. Earl Phantomhive is a giant in the world of commerce, Queen Victoria's faithful servant . . . and a slip of a twelve-year old boy. Fortunately, his loyal butler, Sebastian, is ever at his side, ready to carry out the young master's wishes. And whether Sebastian is called to save a dinner party gone awry or probe the dark secrets of London's underbelly, there is practically nothing Sebastian cannot do. In fact, one might even say Sebastian is too good to be true . . . or at least, he is too good to be human . . .
There's not much I can say about this other than 'meh'. It wasn't bad, wasn't good, but not enough happened, and there wasn't enough character development to make me want to read further.
I found the characters, each and every one of them to just be completely unlikeable, and the narrative seems pretty much classism. The aristocratic Ciel is calm and elegant, although an arrogant little shit, and the staff who are not the Butler come across as stupid, clumsy and ill educated. I found that really irritating.
I think the story has the potential to become really interesting, but volume 1 didn't do enough to excite me, meaning I probably won't bother to read any more.
It's a shame really, the concept and art style are really good. I really wanted to enjoy it.
