Ruby Hill is like the romantic, condensed, nonscary version of House on Haunted Hill. This novella didn't even read like a short story, but more like a scene from a longer novel. It's all about a cop named Corbin who's set to investigate the recent murders at the local abandoned asylum. There's also some paranormal investigators there, just in case it was ghost. This group is of course led by Corbin's estranged girlfriend, Ashley. Nothing really happens for most of the novella, except for Corbin whining about how he pushed Ashley away by blaming her for his brother's death, and Ashley wishing Corbin believed in ghosts. Boring. Then the ghost shows up and tries to kill Ashley, but she doesn't die, and apparently she and Corbin go home to have some make up sex. No, we don't get to read about the sex. Lame.
Ruby Hill does have the makings of a probably pretty creepy horror novel, but as it is, it's just nothing of importance. Plus I did mean it when I said it felt like a condensed version of House on Haunted Hill, complete with a ghost murdering relatives of past staff members, but that movie gave me nightmares for a week. Ruby Hill just bored me, and I'll probably forget about it in a week.
