The Boyfriend Bet has a super cute premise. Charley's boyfriend has just cheated on her. In front of the whole school. With her sister. To make matters worse, Ella dumps him soon after without a care. Then Riley and his brother Jay move in next door. Not only is Riley super hot, but he also seems interested in Charley! Of course, Ella cannot have that and the two start a bet to become Riley's girlfriend first or else.

While I though the story was really cute, The Boyfriend Bet was just an okay read for me because of the characters. I didn't like any of them. They weren't horrible, except Ella who is suppose to be. But even Charley didn't sit right for me. She came across as bratty and annoying. Her best friends were just kind of there. Her mother had to be a complete idiot to not see how awful Ella is to Charley. Riley was a cocky jerk, and his brother Jay was just kind of there. I didn't find myself cheering for any of them.

The humor in The Boyfriend Bet was also not my thing. There's some gross out stuff, and some slapstick, and some just over-the-top scenes which were way overplayed for laughs. I wasn't laughing. It's just not the kind of humor that works for me. All of the jokes and embarrassing scenes felt forced and were obviously written purely for the joke and not because it really added anything to Charley's story.

In the end, The Boyfriend Bet was okay. The premise is great, even if the plot is unoriginal and predictable. I just wish I had connected more with Charley, or enjoyed any of the side characters.
