Full disclosure here: this is definitely my least favorite book of the series. With that being said, it is still worth the read, and let's be honest: it's the FIRST book. It's setting the story, so it's not as involved as the next four books are. I find Emma to be slightly annoying in this one, mostly because of the refusal to believe that she's something different (girl, your best friend is a jaguar shifter. How can you readily accept that, but think it's impossible that you're something more than a totally normal human woman?). And honestly, she stays slightly annoying through the series, but so much happens later on that it doesn't bother me so much, lol.
Also, I'm a huge arachnophobe. I'm ridiculously terrified of spiders, so when I found out one of the shifters is a tarantula, I was thinking I wasn't going to handle this series well, but it turns out the tarantula shifter is my favorite character in the series. He's amazing. And watching his progression throughout the series is so fun and his friendship with Emma is beautiful.
I highly recommend this series!
