Even great writers have their terrible books. The idea behind The Haunted Chair is a pretty good one but Leroux didn't do it justice. I often find French books harder to get into than English, but that might just be a natural preference for my mother tongue. In any case, I found this story uninteresting and unconvincing, and my hope that a clever denouement would be its redeeming feature wasn't satisfied.
