I was dreading Goddess of the Underworld a bit after meeting Persephone in Goddess Interrupted. I hated her immediately, and wasn't sure if I would be able to enjoy a novella all about her. Well, I did like it for the most part, but not because it made me like her. This short starts with Persephone and Hades' wedding. She's dreading it, but she's willing to try. Unfortunately, after a disastrous wedding night things are not looking up. She is miserable and it's making Hades miserable. He does everything to make her happy, but Persephone is set on stewing in her negativity. While I hated just about every decision she made, I was fully invested in her drama. And what drama it is!

Goddess of the Underworld spans the multiple centuries of Persephone and Hades' marriage, right until she becomes mortal and dies for her love. I was kind of expecting to see another side to her, that would make her more sympathetic, but that didn't happen at all. I kind of liked how she remained petty and selfish, since it made her character consistent. She actually seemed worse than she is later, but she is trapped in a loveless marriage that she never wanted, so that's to be expected. However, that doesn't excuse how she chooses to treat everyone around her. At least she got her happy ending.
