I read My Hero Academia: Smash Vol. 1 through VIZ Media: Shonen Jump.

My Hero Academia: Smash is a series intent on retelling the original series that we love so much (My Hero Academia, in case that wasn't painfully obvious), but with a more...humorous twist. If you haven't read the original series, a lot of what happens here probably won't make a lot of sense.

Likewise, if you don't want to see MHA without it's a more serious edge...this probably isn't the series for you. It's a little bit quirky, and a whole lot crazy. Not exactly the series that caught our attention, to put it mildly.

My Hero Academia: Smash Vol. 1 is basically a chaotic run of the introductory arcs for MHA. It covers all of the basics – Deku meeting All Might, entrance exams, everything like that. There is one thing that makes the volume stand out from the original however...it is insane.

I mean that in the best way possible, of course. It's a quirky and playful version of MHA, which can be so much fun. Especially if you're in the right mood for it. Basically, it's a comical retelling of the series thus far, which is fine (if you go into the series expecting that).

Personally, I enjoyed the moments that went off script a bit more. The outtakes and added humor that really made it all stand out. Though I should probably warn you that there's a heavy dose of fan service to be found in here as well, so take that however you like.

On the whole, My Hero Academia: Smash Vol. 1 was everything it promised to be. It was funny and different, a nice change of pace, especially considering how heavy the original series can get at times.
