Sometimes I have a hard time connecting with the "boy/girl" leads of YA fiction, the characters too dependent upon each other to be good characters on their own. But Ethan and Nara? Fabulous characters independent of one another and I loved that! Ethan is an obviously troubled guy, in a tortured sort of way. Nara is strong and resilient, but it soon becomes obvious that she has some secrets of her own. The two of them together become a bit of a force to be reckoned with.
I loved the interaction between them. When one needed strength, the other was there. When situations arose, neither was dominate over the other. I liked that a lot because, too many times, it seems that one tries to take control, making the other submissive.
There are a lot of twists and turns in this story, with both sad moments and happy ones. One I started, I couldn't put it down!
Things to love about BKoD...
--The characters. Whether they were main or supporting, they were well developed and with stories of their own.
Things I wanted more of...
--Faster pace. It was a good story, but I got impatient sometimes waiting for the revelations and twists.
My recommendation: This is a great paranormal fantasy, YA series!
