It’s hard to believe that Spider-Gwen has been around for four volumes (more, if you want to count the other series as well). But it is! I know I have at least another volume to go before I’m fully caught up. But I’m getting there!
I’ll admit that I had let my attempt at getting caught up with Spider-Gwen sort of go by the wayside. What inspired me to catch up again was the new Spider-Gwen series, Ghost Spider. It’s written by one of my favorite authors, so I knew right from the start that I was going to be reading it issue by issue (you’ve got to support your favorites after all). I know that means I’ve already had a couple of points spoiled, including the conclusion to the plot started in this volume. But I’m okay with that.
I swear Gwen seems to have a particular talent for always getting herself into trouble. If it isn’t the law then it’s a big-bad that she’s having trouble taking down. And it’s not like there’s a ton of other superheroes in her world for her to call in as backup. I hate to say it, but more often than not Gwen is on her own.
That fact has been especially true as of late, while also not covering the whole of the truth. With her father in prison she has one less person to watch her back…but at the same time her father is in prison because he’s trying to protect her and clear her name. It’s…complicated.
Speaking of her father, I really hate that they didn’t resolve that plot with him in this volume. I know, intentional cliffhangers for the sake of anxiety. But my anxiety can’t handle it! What happened to him? Is this a permanent sort of thing, or another fake out? I don’t think would have bothered me as much if it wasn’t for the fact that it went from that intense point to a couple of lighter parts focusing on the Mary Janes. I think I would have preferred that they continue the main plot…
I mentioned above that I had gotten a spoiler for this plot, but if I’m being honest with you that only made me more interested as opposed to less interested. I was really curious to see what (spoiler warning) Venom would look like in Earth-65. As it turns out, I haven’t really seen him yet. But I can already tell that he’ll be different. For one thing his origin story is completely different. I wonder, does that mean that there’s no symbiote planet in Universe-65? Or maybe just that the symbiotes are incredibly different?
There were a couple of Earth-65 cameos I wasn’t expecting, like Wolverine and Shadowcat. To be honest, I’m not really sure how I feel about them. I get that it’s tough to show us interesting and believable counterparts for these sorts of characters, since we already know that Earth-65 isn’t overrun with superheroes like Earth-616. So I guess I’m just going to accept it for what it is?
I’m looking forward to reading the next volume or two of Spider-Gwen. It’ll be nice to be finally caught up. Plus there are a few points in this plot that I’m exceptionally anxious to see what happens next in. I’m sure you can guess which ones I’m thinking of.
