The series isn't really anything new in the genre, the same old fantasy tropes (The Chosen One, quest through different lands, evil foe who has spread through the land and must be defeated, etc) appear throughout - but Mayer hits all the right notes with her portrayal.
Firestorm sees Lark and Ash take on the Salamanders (the Fire Elementals) in their home, the Pit. The novel starts with them being arrested for their roles in the deaths of the Salamanders that occurred in the first book, Recurve.
Peta makes a return in this one, as does Cactus, Lark's childhood friend. The Spirit Element is explored a bit more - both through Peta's first charge, a Spirit user and the reveal of the villain Blackbird who also can use Spirit. Plus OMFG Griffin is the Consort - which okay I'd worked that out from the last book BUT - OMFG Liam O'Shea is Griffin's grandson. Liam O'Shea is the grandson of MOTHER FREAKING EARTH! Which shouldn't seem weird as they're all her children or whatnot but the Rylee Adamson series is a lot more urban fantasy so it seems a lot weirder to think the cop rather than the Elemental is related to Mother Earth. There was heaps of action and I liked the new characters introduced. Fantastic addition to the series.
