Paper Girls is a story so entwined in times that occasionally the story is told in a nonlinear fashion. Which considering that this series is essentially Chaos Theory in a nutshell is pretty perfect. Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man, Saga, Runaways) and Cliff Chiang (Human Target, Beware the Creeper, Wonder Woman) bring this crazy and chaotic time traveling world to life.



I’ve been waiting months for this volume to finally come out, so imagine how happy I was to have it arrive in the mail! I love the chaotic and nonlinear forms that go with this story, even if it can be somewhat confusing at times. I know in the end it’ll all make sense.
So it’s no surprise that this volume actually does make quite a bit of sense; a brief pause to give us some explanations, or a quick breather before we’re submerged again. We haven’t been given all of the answers yet (I don’t think that’ll happen until the end of the series, to be honest), but I do feel like I have a better grasp on the what and the why of things. I also have a better idea of the time war (my choice of description, not theirs) that is occurring.
During this breather we’re given, there’s a bit of time for some character development. All of the Paper Girls have been through quite a lot, to say the least, and they have to learn to cope with it all. They also have to learn to live with themselves and each other after everything they’ve been through, which is easier said than done.
I absolutely love the bright covers we already get for this series, and the artwork inside is also perfect. I love that they chose to pull the girls from the ‘80s, giving us the fun fashion and hair of the time, but throwing them through all of time and space. It makes for a really hilarious comparison at times (especially in this volume, trust me).
I’ve been reading this volume by volume, and recently I noticed that the issues weren’t coming out in a monthly basis anymore. This got me really worried that the series was over, something I wasn’t really ready for yet (also, I wasn’t expecting that since Brian K. Vaughan has been writing longer series lately). Thankfully it looks like the series is just taking a little break (which I can understand, since Brian K. Vaughan is also running Saga, which must take a ton of work). So thank goodness for that! The last page does promise they’ll be back, so here’s hoping the creative team keeps their promises!
