A Perfect Proposal

by Katie Fforde

Sophie Apperly's family are fiercely academic and see her practical skills as frivolous - whilst constantly taking advantage of her. So an invitation to stay with her best friend Milly, in New York, is eagerly accepted. Whilst leaving her ungrateful family behind, America holds the key to solving her family's financial woes. She arrives ready for adventure and meets Matilda, a spirited old lady, who invites her to Connecticut for Thanksgiving - to the dismay of Matilda's grandson Luke. Attractive but arrogant, he seems to doubt Sophie's motives for befriending Matilda. When his grandmother gets her way, Luke proposes that he'll help Sophie in her quest to save her family from financial ruin if she repays the favour. But what must she do in return?

It was cute & kind of quirky, but there was something a bit convoluted about it. Sophie is an immediately likable character. She's humble, hard-working, caring--just an all around nice girl trying to make her way. When she visits her friend in New York from England and meets a charming elderly lady named Matilda, Sophie's life changes for the better. It just takes a LONG time to get there!

Along the way, she works, helps out her family, makes new friends and connects with family members she had never met. This is where the story got a bit drawn out for me. There were a lot of "subplots" that kind of lost me a few times.

All in all, I'd recommend this book for those like me, who enjoy some romance, some humor, and a nice tidy happy ending!
