Luck on the Line (On the Verge, #1)

"With a perfect blend of humor, drama and heat, LUCK ON THE LINE is a welcome and much needed addition to the new adult genre." -RT BOOK REVIEWS
Despite her name, Lucky Pierce has always felt a little cursed. Refusing to settle for less or settle down, she changes jobs as often as she changes boyfriends. When her celebrity chef mother challenges her to finish something, Lucky agrees to help her launch Boston's next hot restaurant, The Star. Even if it means working with the infuriating, egotistical, and undeniably sexy head chef.

James loves being known as Boston's hottest bad boy in the kitchen, but if he wants to build a reputation as a serious chef, he has to make this restaurant work and keep his scandalous past out of the headlines. Getting involved with his boss's spoiled, sharp-tongued daughter is definitely not on the menu.

As the launch of The Star looms and the tension and chemistry heat up in the kitchen, they're going to need more than a little luck to keep everything from boiling over.

Lucky Pierce never stays in one place for long. Luck on the Line finds her on her annual return back home for her father's death anniversary. There she reunites with her celebrity chef mother who is opening up a new restaurant. Lucky also finds that the rude dude from the coffee shop is the head chef and that she's expected to play nice while she's there. Lucky just wants to remember her dad and move on, but instead she's managing the restaurant in her mother's absence and growing close to sexy Chef James.

There is a lot going on in Luck on the Line. It's kind of hectic, but it works for the story as Lucky's home life is a lot more chaotic than she thought it would be. In addition to the romance and Lucky running the restaurant, there's also her strained relationship with her mother, James' mysterious past, a stalkerish reporter, and something weird going on with Lucky's best friend Bradley. She's trying to juggle all of that without losing herself in the process and figuring out what her next step is going to be. It's a lot for one person to deal with.

I adored the romantic aspect of Luck on the Line. It's the fairly typical hate to love type of romance. James and Lucky do not get along at all when they first meet and instead of working together, try to avoid each other as much as possible. They both make assumptions about the other based on what little they know about each other until they're forced into situations that allow them to really get to know each other. There's also plenty of steamy scenes! And yes, sometimes they involve food. Bacon!

Luck on the Line was a really enjoyable read. I loved seeing Lucky finally realize that she doesn't need to run from state to state, from school to school, and bar to bar to find what she's looking for out of life. It was also nice to see a close mother-daughter relationship, even if it wasn't perfect. They're learning to be in each other's lives again. And obviously the romance was great, and there was no huge drama to pull them apart then throw them back together!
