Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton

Blood Magic (Blood Journals, #1)

by Tessa Gratton

The murder of her parents has left Silla damaged and lost, and Silla's insistence that her father is not to blame only alienates her further from her friends and family. When a mysterious spell book arrives, Silla hopes it will lead to some answers about her parents' killer. In her first attempt at magic, in an old graveyard near her home, Nick, the new boy in town spies on her; he recognizes the magic that Silla is performing as the same magic his mother performed with him, before she went mad. Before long, Silla and Nick connect, though Nick is unwilling to share his history with blood magic with Silla. When Silla's friends start showing signs of possession, Silla, Nick and Silla's brother, Reese, must contend with a deadly, immortal woman who will stop at nothing to take the book of spells from them.

The book is told in the alternating POV's of Nick and Silla, the main characters, and a diary entry which at first means nothing, but later on begins to play a central role in the book. Usually I love alternating POV's and learning how different characters view a similar situation. Nick and Silla's POV was simliar. Sometimes I would have to go back a few pages to find out whose POV I was reading in and felt that the story would have been more fun to read from one POV.

The other issue that I had was with Nick and Silla's relationship. They are attracted to one another at first, but after a few pages, their relationship progresses into love. I felt that their relationship was fast-paced and unrealistic. I did not see the progression of their relationship and therefore I wasn't invested in it and really couldn't care about it.

One thing that I did enjoy was the interesting and original concepts. It felt so cool to read a book about using your blood to create magic. I would admit though that at times the magic aspect of the book seemed really gory and creepy. As a lover of mysteries, I enjoyed trying to figure out a huge mystery in the book, but I found the mystery easy to figure out.

This novel had dual POV's which didn't suit the book and it contained the dreaded insta-love, but I did enjoy it's original concepts, the mystery and the horrifying magic.
