I honestly thought I was going to have to stop my walk to google what a Banshee is. Luckily, I didn't have to wait long to find out and to be honest, I was quite surprised. You know how sometimes you think...wouldn't it be cool to have a mystic ability? (Or is that just me?) Well, I have no desire to be a Banshee. Saying that, I actually really liked Brendan, the hero, in Always Be My Banshee. For starters, he's Irish, tall, a little moody, and dedicated to his family. Secondly, his ability is not one that makes him OTT cocky or egotistical, if anything, he's more reserved because of it. Thirdly, Brendan's a bit of a loner and doesn't have a lot of experience with women. Together, these things make Brendan a very appealing hero and a perfect addition to Mystic Bayou.
I really liked Cordelia and her character was great to get to know. I loved that Mystic Bayou ended up being the perfect place for her to live in and helped her deal with the bad side of her abilities. It was also great that she found someone to finally give her guidance and tips with how to deal with the negative thoughts and feelings she deals with daily. I can't imagine having to cope with being bombarded with memories, good and bad, from touching people and objects. Constantly having to shield yourself from touch would be sad. When Cordelia meets Brendan, it was obvious that they were exactly what each other needed.
I love the town of Mystic Bayou, but my absolute favourite is Zed, the mayor. I think I love him even more because of the way Jonathan Davis, the narrator, portrays him. His accent and characterisation is absolutely perfect for Zed, and brings a smile to my face every time the mayor enters a scene. Amanda Ronconi is no slouch as a narrator, and definitely enhances the listening experience.
I've really come to love this series and I think Always Be My Banshee is now one of my favourites. The ending had me nervous that we were coming to an end, but luckily, Goodreads is saying that there is at least one more.
If you are a fan of audiobooks, and like para-fantasy, I highly recommend the Mystic Bayou series for a good laugh.
