The Hunt by Megan Shepherd

The Hunt (Cage, #2)

by Megan Shepherd

They’ve left the cage—but they’re not free yet.

After their failed escape attempt, Cora, Lucky, and Mali have been demoted to the lowest level of human captives and placed in a safari-themed environment called the Hunt, along with wild animals and other human outcasts. They must serve new Kindred masters—Cora as a lounge singer, Lucky as an animal wrangler, and Mali as a safari guide—and follow new rules or face dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, Nok and Rolf have been moved into an enormous dollhouse, observed around the clock by Kindred scientists interested in Nok’s pregnancy. And Leon, the only one who successfully escaped, has teamed up with villainous Mosca black-market traders.

The former inhabitants of the Cage are threatened on all fronts—and maybe worst of all, one of the Hunt’s Kindred safari guests begins to play a twisted game of cat and mouse with Cora. Separated and constantly under watch, she and the others must struggle to stay alive, never mind find a way back to each other. When Cassian secretly offers to train Cora to develop her psychic abilities—to prove the worthiness of humanity in a series of tests called the Gauntlet—she’ll have to decide fast if she dares to trust the Kindred who betrayed her, or if she can forge her own way to freedom.

The Hunt is the sequel to The Cage which i read last year and I had the great honor of meeting the author when she did a signing at the tricities barnes and nobles here in Washington state. I really like The Cage it does a great job of drawing you into that sci fi world and not letting go. In this book Cora and her friends are no longer in the cage and now it on to the next step or phase or experiement that the Kindred masters have planned.

As Cora puts it when she talks to Cassian "Putting me in a menagerie is hardly a second chance. It's further punishment" Cassian really try to talk Cora out of her plan to beat the so called Gauntlet. "The definition of stubborn is to know what the right thing is to do, but not to do it anyway just to prove a point. and right now you should really just give up."

Our two love birds Nok and Rolf get trapped in some weird doll house with a Kindred who wants to be come the mommy to their baby. Of course Nok go off and tells her "And if she grows up on alien space station, eating replicated food that all tastes like chalk?" In response to a point where the Kindred are trying to test different raising theories on the fetus.

In the end just like The Cage, The Hunt has its own secrets and we find out each one as Cora and her friends try to escape and the author leaves us at the end of this adventure with a few more clues but no real answers i can not wait to find out what happens in the last and finally book of this epic sci fi story.
