After an attack left him a changeling - half vampire and half human - Dirk Adams has hunted vampires. With the superior strength and speed of a vampire but the moral conscience of a human, he's perfect for the job. He has made it his life's work to patrol the streets of D.C. looking for Harris and Patterson, two vampires on a feeding frenzy. Little did he know his search would lead him to Dr. Bethany Stavinoski - the top biochemist with Van Horne Technologies. She loves her job but her current project baffles her - things aren't adding up and her boyfriend Miles, the company CEO, won't answer her questions. Just when she thinks he's going to confide in her, he proposes instead and just when she thinks things can't get stranger, her lab is destroyed, her assistant is missing and the security guard is dead from puncture wounds to the throat. It looks like the work of Harris and Patterson...and Bethany hates standing on the sidelines. Dirk knows that a normal bodyguard is useless so starts to protect Bethany without telling her. But the more he protects her, the more intrigued he becomes by her. What will Bethany say when she discovers he's a changeling?
Dirk Adams is a changeling, he has some of the abilities and powers of vampires but is still human. He tries to defeat vampires and protect humanity along with others in his group.
Bethany Stavinoski is a top biochemist and is doing research on a project that has gone from mundane to dangerous. Not due to the chemicals involved but due to people chasing her. She's engaged to the owner of the business but there appears to be something missing. When Dirk rescues her, neither of them really want to be in a relationship but the two of them end up questioning some of their assumptions.
I did like Bethany, she's a strong character and comes across often as being the distracted scientist. There's nothing deep in it but it's fun.
