The first thing I noticed about this book was that Alexa had a definite, unique voice. I immediately knew who she was and wanted to know what she had to say. She may be the typically kick ass heroine, but I was still drawn to her. She's loyal and caring of her friends and family, but sometimes her anger gets the best of her. Her heart is in the right place though.
I loved the world the author has created. Alexa, her sister Nelly, and their friend Jackson all head out to a hidden community in New Jersey after Lamia (the bad, night dwelling type vampires) attack them. On the surface, Two Rivers looks like a normal community of vampires and werewolves, but soon Alexa realizes that something is seriously off. Things are too perfect appearance wise. Why? I have no idea, but Alexa is going to stop at nothing to find out. There's also some interesting secrets in the forest surrounding the city.
As for the romance aspect, it's not front and center. There is some romance, but it's definitely not the focus. I do appreciate the fact that Alexa and Jackson were friends first, and there was none of this undying love at first sight nonsense. They're pretty cute together, but I do have my suspicions about Jackson. And there does seem to be the possibility of a love triangle. It's one of those "we're destined for each other" type of things, but I think it's well done, and it makes sense since we got some history of the situation.
In the end, Blood Warrior is an action packed and interesting addition to the genre. I enjoyed the characters, the world, and the mythology immensely. It does end on a cliffhanger though, so I'm going to need to get my hands on the next book relatively soon!
