Turns out, Tempting Danger and I were meant to be. I didn't know this when I added this to my tbr literally years ago. I didn't know it when I saw it discounted on kindle but passed it over because of the cover. I didn't even know it a day later when, by some form of miracle, I found out that it was, in fact, on my tbr, and decided to risk it and buy the book after all.
But if I didn't know it them, I sure knew it a couple chapters in, when I realized Tempting Danger is a wonderful mix of some of my all time favorite series; Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson and In Death.
If you like your heroines kick-ass, determined, dry witted and very passionate about their job, you will love Lily Yu. She's a young homicide detective who takes no one's shit. She's smart, capable and rational. And her job means the world for her. Which is why she didn't count of any of this happening to her, but there you have it. Sometimes, shit happens.
If you like your heroes to be charming, confident and utterly devoted to their better half even when they ram into them like a freight train, you will love Rule. Rule is, basically, a werewolf prince. He is handsome, rich (sort of), and has no shortage of woman interested in him. BUT HE IS NO JERK. This guy is just such a sweetheart, even before he falls for our detective. And after... let's just say, he is a perfect blend of Alpha and devotion. No high handed maneuvers, but no lack of worry and protectiveness, either. Be ready to swoon girls, pals and nonbinary pals! (Oops. I may be watching too much Thomas Sanders).
Now, their romance hits the both of them pretty hard and suddenly. But the beautiful thing is that, despite the immediate attraction and magical element to it, it's not insta love. If you count the days, you could try to argue I'm wrong. But Wilks builds it so beautifully, especially in the organic way the characters react to their predicament. They are *not* in love over night. But slowly, sometimes because they have no choice, they open to each other, draw comfort from each other, and find their grounds together. IT IS GLORIOUS TO READ OF. The Romance is probably my favorite part of the novel because it is the crux of it while also not overwhelming it.
The magical world Wilks created is really intriguing, and I can't wait to read more to it. There is the "standards" stuff - magical beings that were once not considered people because of their out worldly nature, but now there is an uneasy truce with the human world. There are more things going bump in the night that humans realize. Bigotry.
But then there is the added layer of realms, and the way magic actually works that is really fascinating.
I can't wait to read more of this series, and in fact I'm going to move on to the next one right away!!
