Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs

Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, #4)

by Patricia Briggs

Car mechanic and sometime shapeshifter Mercy Thompson has learned, the hard way, why her race was almost exterminated. When European vampires immigrated to North America, they found Mercy's people had a hidden talent - for vampire slaying. Unfortunately for Mercy, the queen of the local vampire seethe has discovered her true identity. She's also furious when she learns Mercy has crossed her and killed one of her vampires. Mercy may be protected from direct reprisals by the werewolf pack (and her interesting relationship with its Alpha), but that just means Marsilia will come after Mercy some other way. So Mercy had better prepare to watch her back.

Okay... Even though this is a really great story, it's actually one of my least favorite in the series??? Like, the main plot itself. Blackwell? Blackthorn? (I read the book yesterday and I can't remember) and that whole thing is just kind of meh. It puts Mercy away from all the cast I love, and it just kind of feel... I don't know. Like there needed to be more plot between the Seethe stuff and the pack stuff, so we just put on a one-off adventure that won't really impact anything in the long run (though it does let Mercy know of another ability of hers. Let's hope this ability, cool as it is, will be useful in the next installments to justify this adventure lol)

That being said, I LOVE what this installment does for all our characters:

-- I LOVE Stefan here, even as I hate what has been done to him. But I love the struggle between him and Marsilia, and I loved the implication of his love towards Mercy, even though I'm not sure if it's romantic love (also, CAN Stefan find a girl to properly be *in* love with? I would love to see this vamp catch a break).

-- I LOVE MERCY AND ADAM! I have been excited for my ship to sail for a while, and they are officially there and I love it! I love Mercy being Adam's mate (gosh that man adores here lol), I love the introduction of the pack and a bigger exploration of pack magic (which we'll continue to explore in the next book) and I just love the dynamics between them so much. Also YAS Mercy claim that fine men they all better know he's yours!

-- Chad is super cute. We will probably never see him again, but STILL!

-- I low key love Marsilia. I also think she is kind of a tragic figure, same as Stefan is. At the end of the day, protection of her people is more important than the people she loves and she will do anything to protect them, but she is also left terribly isolated by this fact.

-- More people we're expected to care about dying. I was sad for the family, but by this point, Briggs has killed a side character or three every installment. It's not getting any more impactful. If the alternative is killing one of my favs I definitely prefer this side character massacre, though.

-- I still love Ben so much. I want him to fall in love somewhere in the course of this series because that would be so funny to watch. Adam telling Mercy Ben adores her made my day, and Ben and the Kyle boy-toy remark made me laugh so bad.
