Book Summary:

Although James and Johnny Golden are twins, they’ve been apart for ages. James left, and she said she could, but she hasn’t returned since. Only her brother’s death becomes a strong enough compulsion to bring James back to Hawthorne.

Something about Johnny’s death doesn’t sit right with James. She was told it was an accident, but that doesn’t feel right. So she’s not going to let the matter rest until she gets the answers she so desperately needs.

My Review:

I have to give it to Adrienne Young; she always finds a way to create a new and compelling story. I don’t think any of her books have been alike, and I kind of love that. As for A Sea of Unspoken Things, it’s a thriller novel that leans slightly into the realm of magical realism.

A Sea of Unspoken Things is an atmospheric read. You can immediately sense James’ loss, but it’s more than that. Hawthorne feels very much alive - and isolated. It’s easy to understand why she felt she had to run away.

The premise of the story may begin with a murder mystery, but it quickly becomes clear that there are many secrets buried in this small town, creating a layered mystery that’ll prove dangerous to unravel.

Adding a romantic subplot and a sweet/loyal dog was much appreciated and helped to enhance the story, at least in my book. I’m not sure the epilogue was needed, but I understand why it was added.

Highlights:
Magical Realism
Murder Mystery
Twin Connection
Romantic Subplot
