Through the Door (The Thin Veil, #1)

by Jodi McIsaac

It’s been seven years since the love of Cedar McLeod’s life left with no forwarding address. All she has left of him are heart-wrenching memories of happier times and a beautiful six-year-old daughter, Eden. Then, one day, Eden opens her bedroom door and unwittingly creates a portal that leads to anywhere she imagines.

But they’re not the only ones who know of Eden’s gift, and soon the child mysteriously vanishes.

Desperate for answers, Cedar digs into the past and finds herself thrust into a magical world of Celtic myths, fantastical creatures, and bloody rivalries. Teaming up with the unlikeliest of allies, Cedar must bridge the gap between two worlds and hold tight to the love in her heart…or lose everything to an ancient evil.

The first in the Thin Veil series, Through the Door is a pulse-pounding adventure that takes readers across the globe and deep into the hidden realms of Celtic lore.

What would you do if your beloved 6-year-old daughter suddenly started opening doors to other places from her bedroom? Do you assume you're going crazy? Do you remove every door in your apartment - just in case? Do you try, once again, to hunt down the man who ditched you before he knew of your pregnancy? These are all questions that Cedar faces as her daughter Eden starts creating doors/portals to elsewhere that only she can close.

I am a fan of all things Celtic, so that was the initial draw to this book. An interesting take on the myths and legends of the Tuatha De Danann, and their place in our everyday world. Though I generally skip anything pertaining to "romance" this was light enough in that department, and woven truly well into the rest of the story, that it wasn't something that stood out.

The ending was interesting, and while tying up some loose ends, made it fairly clear that there is more to come. I wasn't originally aware that this book is the first in what is to be a series, but upon discovering that, I was pleasantly surprised - I look forward to reading more.

Through The Door would be a great summer beach read - not too fluffy, but not overly intense, with some fascinating twists on the familiar.
