Handyman Saitou in Another World, Vol. 1

by Ichitomo Kazutomo

Handyman Saito has never been anyone special. All his life, he’s had average grades, ordinary athletic skill, a commonplace job… But his unremarkable path takes a turn when he wakes up in another world. Here, warriors, wizards, and elves accompany him on quests delving deep into dungeons, and Saito realizes for the first time what it’s like to be needed. After all, who other than the handyman could be trusted to open locked treasure chests or repair his allies’ equipment? Beginning with a simple “thank you,” this is the story of an ordinary person’s fulfilling life.

Summary:

Handyman Saito never thought himself to be special. To him, life has been average. Decent but average grades, typical skills, a stereotypical job, the works. But sometimes, it’s fate that makes life unique.

One day, Saito woke up to a world that wasn’t his own. This world is full of quests and more, and ironically, a handyman is highly needed in this world. Who else could open all those treasure chests?

Review:

Okay, I’ll admit it: I LOVE this concept. Handyman Saitou in Another World, Vol. 1 introduces us to a story where basically an ordinary dude ends up in a magical world. Ironically, it’s his ordinary skills that make him valuable there.

In other words, it’s a pretty fun isekai that I can see people falling head over heels for (who doesn’t love a story where they can picture themselves, right?). That said, I didn’t feel much of an emotional connection to the story or character, so it was harder for me to care.

I think it’s important to realize that Handyman Saitou in Another World is a comedy first, a fantasy world second. As such, the world and characters aren’t really all that fleshed out. It’s more like they exist to support the humor, not vice versa. That might work for some stories, but it felt “meh” here.

Will I continue the series? Probably not?
