Home Fires is the 6th Hank Worth procedural thriller by Claire Booth. Released 2nd April 2024 by Severn House, it's 256 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links.
A huge explosion with multiple casualties sees resources stretched beyond capacity for Hank's department. He and his team work feverishly to resolve the explosion crime and forensic work and find out what actually happened.
The characters are very well delineated and the author has an impressive facility with characterization and setting. There are several subplotlines which entwine throughout the read to a satisfying (exciting) conclusion.
It's not derivative, but fans of Craig Johnson, Steven Havill, and Lisa Regan will find a lot to like here. The book's plot, denouement, and resolution are self contained in this volume. For readers who elect to read them out of order, it's the 6th book, so expect some minor spoilers in the characters' development and interrelationships from earlier in the series.
The language and violence and descriptions are moderately rough and include "F"-bombs, lesser cursing, and some graphic descriptions.
Four stars. Well written and engaging. With 6 books extant, it would be a good candidate for a long binge/buddy read.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
