Flying Witch 6 by Chihiro Ichizuka

Flying Witch 6

by Chihiro Ichizuka

A surreal comedy in the vein of Yotsuba&! and Nichijou with a magical theme combines humor, slice of life and traditional Japanese culture in this debut work from Chihiro Ishizuka.

Everyone gathers to grill giblets to celebrate Chinatsu’s first bit of witchcraft. The familiars are lured to school with the promise of a tasty lunch... which draws the attention of an upperclassman witch. Makoto is tasked with solving a case where people get spirited away, but the solution turns out to be very down-to-earth...

Summary:

Makoto Kowata is a witch. Or rather, she's a witch in training. As such, she has packed up all her belongings (and cat) to live with distant relatives. It's a bit of a family tradition – a way of sending young witches out into the world - but in a gentler way.

It seems that there are witches (and potential witches) all around! Not only is there an aspiring witch within the household, but there's a witch in training within the school. In other words, there's plenty of potential allies and fellow students for Makoto to practice with.

Review:

This series is so endearing and calming. It's no wonder I was looking forward to reading Flying Witch Vol. 6. This volume may be my favorite yet – mainly because there's a sizeable cat-familiar subplot (that was really cute and fun!).

That said, I did enjoy meeting another young witch. I love that they made a point of having her act very differently from our Makoto. It's important to remember that witches come in all kinds. We also must remember that despite the casual way we see magic portrayed, it isn't something everyone knows about.

I'm still really loving this series and will be sad to be caught up with it (because I've gotten quite used to binging it, obviously).
