Holiday In Death by J D Robb

Holiday In Death (In Death, #7)

by J D Robb

She smelled it, fresh death. Both metallic and fruity. Easing the door all the way open, she found it . . .

It's Christmas-time in New York City, but homicide lieutenant Eve Dallas struggles to get into the holiday spirit. Finding a woman strangled to death by a murderous Santa doesn't help. And he's left behind a present: a partridge in a pear tree, pinned to the victim's hair.

With a creeping dread, Eve watches the bodies mount and realises the key - the killer is counting down the twelve days to Christmas. And there is only one connection. The victims had been using the same dating service.

Eve enters a dark world where searching for The One is fraught with terror, leaving her racing to find the murderer, as things get much too close to home.

The holidays can be murder, and Eve’s got four on her plate in Holiday in Death. Some guy is dressing like Santa then brutalizing his victims before leaving a “12 Days of Christmas” token behind. Eve’s got his pattern and lots of things to trace him by, but Santa is always a few steps ahead. But this case is hitting Eve hard because of the similarities to her childhood. She should pass it along to someone else, but she’s too invested.

Holiday in Death was super intense. The murderer is just cruel in his methods. He’s also extremely smart and removes all traces of himself from the scene. It’s sickening that someone could do this to another person. But Eve is an excellent cop and she’s not going to stop until she gets him, even if it’s a detriment to her own health.

As always, I was furiously flipping pages to learn more and see how Eve solves this case. It also has a lot of interesting character development, as Eve and Roarke have never made any happy Christmas memories. He’s determined to do that for her, and she’s navigating gift shopping for those closest to her. There’s also a lot of Peabody which I enjoyed. She’s such a fun character, especially her tension with McNab! All in all, Holiday in Death was another great read.
