"Christopher Paolini is a true rarity." —The Washington Post

When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and, gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

I know that many people love to hate on this book, feeling that it is a poor rendition of the already tried-and-true Lord of the Rings. I’m the naysayer. The Hero’s Journey trope that was the foundation of the LotR books is very much present in Eragon. As it is in most high fantasy. That being said, that’s where the similarities end for me. The writing style is very different, the feeling of it is very different. I’ve read it a few times, and I love falling into the story every single time. The world-building is great, the story is absorbing, and the characters are interesting. It’s everything I need from a fantasy read.
