Scott Pilgrim vs The World by Bryan Lee O'Malley

Scott Pilgrim vs The World (Scott Pilgrim, #2)

by Bryan Lee O'Malley

The second installment in the brilliant ‘Scott Pilgrim’ graphic novel series from Bryan Lee O’Malley, writer of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off – now a major Netflix series.

Scott Pilgrim has two girls on the go.

When he’s with Knives Chau, he feels like he can erase his past and start over. When he’s with Ramona Flowers, he’s ready to accept the past, grow up and move on. But like all adult relationships, Ramona comes with baggage – in her case, seven evil ex-boyfriends, showing up one by one to challenge Scott for the right to date her. What happens when Knives and Ramona meet? What happens when Scott’s own ex-flames get thrown in? How will Scott deal? Which girl will he choose? Fights! Drama! Secrets revealed!

Find the answers to these questions and more in ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World’, the second volume in Bryan Lee O’Malley’s brilliant graphic novel series.

Summary:

Scott Pilgrim does a pretty good job of making his life perfect. He's in a band, lives with a friend, and even has a high school girlfriend. But as we all know, things aren't always as they appear. Scott is still reeling from a big breakup and hasn't had a serious relationship since then.

But when he crosses paths with a girl named Ramona Flowers, he suddenly wants more. He wants her in his life, even if that means battling her seven evil ex-boyfriends. That's not too unusual, right?

Review:

Unsurprisingly, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is just as good as the first volume! It's funny, strange, and the perfect combination of elements. This is my first time reading the series, and I am having so much fun!

That said, there was more backstory in this volume than I expected. I knew it existed, but it was nice to see it (some parts were cut from the movie, in case that wasn't obvious). I hope the new adaptation keeps these bits.

As such, I'm curious to see where these bits of backstory lead. I know in the long run where they lead (Scott's broken heart followed by him falling head over heels for Ramona). You can see that they're setting up for a lot, which I love (the payout is almost always worth it).

I don't think the fight was quite as good in this volume. Then again, Scott did find a clever way to get around the fight, so that was probably inevitable? There is another fight that occurs, so I suppose it balances out...
