This is the second series I am reading from the writing pair of Ilona Andrews (after the Kate Daniels series of course). I've got to admit, it took me some time to get into it, but mostly because I was kind of always expecting and waiting for Nevada to turn more into Kate, or to be more similar to her. And Nevada ist most definitely not similar to Kate, which is a very good thing. Of course she is also a strong female character and she is sassy and often sarcastic, but in a very different way than Kate was. Nevada has a family, people she cares for and she has a pretty healthy outlook on life, especially compared to the messed up life Kate had. She has also not really a lot of brute power at her disposal, which is another very interesting thing. She can fight a little, she is an excellent shot, very intelligent and can handle herself, but she has pretty much no fighting magic powers, while Rogan seems to have all of them. I don't think I have ever really read a book with a protagonist that hasn't really got active, brute strength to end a big final fight with. Rogan has that power, but Nevada has not. At least not at this point. And I kind of like it. She is pretty normal (except for the magic she does have and is learning to control) and just got dropped into a situation that is way over her head and learns to deal with it.
To shorten this review a bit (cause I could go on and on about this), I enjoy the storyline, the side characters and the worldbuilding. It is really an excellent read and I'm very much looking forward to the continuation of this series.
