Soul Eater, Vol. 8

by Atsushi Ohkubo

While Black*Star and Tsubaki keep Mifune and Mosquito distracted, Sid is able to locate Arachnophobia's demon tool and put an abrupt end to their sinister plans. But though the evil organization won't be manipulating anyone's morality anytime soon, the blueprints for the dangerous tool are sealed away in Shinigami-sama's secret vault rather than destroyed. Surely Shinigami-sama would never think of constructing a demon tool himself?!

Summary:

In a world where witches, minions, and tainted souls exist, there must also be those that stand against them. These people are known as Weapon Meisters and their Weapons. They are charged with devouring tainted souls and protecting the world.

Black★Star and Tsubaki have found themselves in quite the battle – and it all started because you know who was being his usual self. While this fight is ending, new information comes to light about the latest threat the Meisters and Weapons will face.

Review:

Okay, so there's a lot to unpack in Soul Eater Vol. 8. It has a fair bit of character development, not to mention a lot of information about the new villain on the scene. Oh! And let's not forget the fights.

This volume spends a lot of time setting up events later in the series. First, there's that fight, which leads directly to new Arachnophobia information. Then there's Death the Kid's arc further pushes the tension. Finally, we have a big Medusa revelation and an update on Crona.

As I said, it's a lot. And there's plenty of subtext for fans to look closely at. Some of it will help connect the dots later, while others are the perfect fodder for theory-crafting. In other words, it's my favorite type of subtle detailing.

Highlights:
