Witch Hat Atelier 4 by Kamome Shirahama

Witch Hat Atelier 4 (Witch Hat Atelier, #4)

by Kamome Shirahama

A beautifully-illustrated story about a girl who longs for magic in her life and learns that, on the inside, she already is what she wishes she could be. Reminiscent of Studio Ghibli, this lushly-drawn story was voted one of the top 10 manga of the year in 2018 by the Japanese manga industry. In a world where everyone takes wonders like magic spells and dragons for granted, Coco is a girl with a simple dream: She wants to be a witch. But everybody knows magicians are born, not made, and Coco was not born with the gift for magic. She's resigned to her un-magical life, until a travelling magician passes through her village, and Coco learns what everybody 'knows' might not be the truth.

Summary:

Coco lives in a world where magic exists. Unfortunately, she's no magician. That's the one thing she's desperately wanted to be ever since she was a little girl. However, she has also been told that magicians are born, not made. Until one day, Coco sees something that changes her life. Now she's a witch in training.

Some of Qifrey's students are ready to take the next test: The Sincerity of the Shield. Unfortunately, things do not go according to plan, as the Brimmed Caps have other...much darker...plans for this crew.

Review:

I think that Witch Hat Atelier Vol. 4 is the addition this series needs. It upped the stakes and simultaneously gave us a chance to learn more about the secondary characters of this world. In truth, many of Coco's fellow students had felt rather hollow before this point.

Not anymore! Richeh gets a chance to shine in this volume. Likewise, Aggot got another opportunity for character development. Both characters needed this for the reasons stated above. Plus, it was fun to see how different they are.

That said, the situation these girls find themselves in is...harrowing, to say the least. I'm rooting for them to find a way out of this situation. Once again, Witch Hat Atelier has found the perfect (and meanest) cliffhanger conclusion for this volume. It's starting to be a trend, and I love/hate it.
