Having read Her Dear and Loving Husband, book 1 in this series, I was looking forward to continuing on with the story of James and Sarah. Would the efforts of investigative report Kenneth Hempel have any affects on their lives after they managed to hide the fact that James was a vampire was from him.

James and Sarah's story is heartbreaking. Here is a couple who, against all odds, managed to find each other and build the life they should have had before it was interrupted by the Salem Witch Trials. For James and Sarah, the past has a ugly way of repeating itself, except this time it's James who falls under the scrutiny of hate and fear.

Poor James is a man who knows exactly what he lost and what his life was like before he found Sarah. When everything he loves is threatened, he tends to hang on extremely tightly. Who can blame him? The man lost everything and then somehow managed to find his meaning for living again. So when all of that is threatened, James panics, hides things from Sarah and contemplates what his next steps should be.

While Sarah may not have spent hundreds of years living without her soul mate, she has the same fears as James when vampires are threatened. She may not have lived it personally, but she does have the memories of her previous life as Elizabeth, James' first wife, and worries that what happened to her will now happened to James.

Meredith Allard does a wonderful job of creating two characters that can break your heart but also have you cheering for them to finally get their happily ever after. While this middle book in the series doesn't leave us with that HEA for our couple, it left me eagerly awaiting the final installment with James and Sarah's continued journey.
