Sovereign (Nemesis, #2)

by April Daniels

The highly anticipated sequel to Dreadnought, featuring "the most exciting new superheroes in decades." (Kirkus, starred review)

Only nine months after her debut as the superhero Dreadnought, Danny Tozer is already a scarred veteran. Protecting a city the size of New Port is a team-sized job and she's doing it alone. Between her newfound celebrity and her demanding cape duties, Dreadnought is stretched thin, and it's only going to get worse.

When she crosses a newly discovered billionaire supervillain, Dreadnought comes under attack from all quarters. From her troubled family life to her disintegrating friendship with Calamity, there's no lever too cruel for this villain to use against her.

She might be hard to kill, but there's more than one way to destroy a hero. Before the war is over, Dreadnought will be forced to confront parts of herself she never wanted to acknowledge.

And behind it all, an old enemy waits in the wings, ready to unleash a plot that will scar the world forever.

Gods I fucking love this series.

The Audible audiobook is amazing and totally worth it. I literally looked up the narrator, Natasha Soudek's other work it was that good.

This would also make a great showing as a miniseries or movie. The space fight scenes with the eerie silence....I get shivers just imagining it.

No stone is left unturned, no thread left dangling. It's an amazing weave of inter, intra, and extraternal conflicts. It's got EVERYTHING. The fucked up blood family and found family, friends and lovers, betrayal and enemies, double crosses and plot twists, TERFs and fascists, action and inner turmoil.

At times it might feel bogged down with too much detail or slowed down with too much stuff flying around, but it all comes together and is really important for plot and character development.

This isn't a kiddie gloved superhero tale. People DIE. People SUFFER. People LIVE with terrible consequences of their actions, both good and bad.

Sovereign goes beyond bland white and rich dudes, beyond simple take over the world villains, and damsels in distress. *This* is the kind of superhero shit we need these days!

I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!!!
