When Larkin's mother Ivy vanishes, Larkin returns home to South Carolina for the first time after nearly nine years. As Larkin, CeeCee and Bitty frantically search for Ivy long buried questions want answers. The story alternates between 1951 and 2010. In 1951, Bitty, CeeCee and Margaret are on the brink of womanhood but still so young when they go on an adventure to Myrtle Beach that will change their lives forever and set in motion the events that lead up to Ivy's disappearance in 2010. When Ivy is discovered near death at her family's old burnt ruin of a plantation house Larkin wants answers. Larkin discovers two ribbons that wishes were written on inside the tree of dreams,  a moss-draped oak, that was once a secret hiding place where Margaret, CeeCee and Bitty placed ribbons with their dearest wishes written on them. Larkin has a lot to deal with in this story, she was humiliated by Jackson, her crush, when she was a teenager. Now Jackson wants to date the new Larkin and I could not stand Jackson and was literally telling Larkin do not trust him! I did not understand why Larkin could not see Jackson for the slime he was. In addition to the Jackson drama, Bennett, her childhood bestie, brother and twin to Mabry her other bestie, is perfect for Larkin. I was so rooting for Jackson to skulk away and for Bennett and  Larkin to get together.
Meanwhile Ivy lies in a coma but can hear every word her visitors are saying. We get to know Ivy's backstory ans little by little the story
and secrets fall into place. We learn about Mack, husband to Ivy and father to Larkin, the mistakes he has made, I was hoping that Larkin
could forgive him.
This book is full of southern wit, charm and plenty of drama. It is a wonderful tale of friendship and forgiveness.
