Time Cat by Lloyd Alexander is an enthralling adventure for a young boy and his cat.

Is Jason going to learn something from this trip?

Jason

Jason is the main character of the story besides his talking cat Gareth who is taking him on this adventure. Gareth is taking Jason on this journey of discovering a version of himself that will make him a proud person when he gets older. Not only him but his parents as well. Jason matures throughout the book. What I like about Jason is that no matter throughout all the times, he always was an advocate for cats and teaching someone how to take care of them. Another thing that he did that I like was that he still stood up for himself and got the other person thinking about why they aren't doing the same.

The Journey

The journey through this novel goes to nine different time periods so that Jason can unknowingly learn some things about each period but also teaching him something about himself. Jason did a lot of that in the different places that we visited. I don't want to give away those places as I think that if you're going to read this book, you can figure those out for yourself. Each different place and time was pretty great, and I loved how the author was able to write about them in the same whimsical way a middle-grader can see them.

Five Stars

Time Cat by Lloyd Alexander is an excellent book for middle graders looking for adventure along with enjoying a talking cat. A lot is going on in the book, but it all goes together well. I liked Jason and Gareth a lot. The last thing that I like is how the author sets the ending scene. I am giving this book five stars and recommending it to anyone.
