I honestly can't remember reading the first one, though I know I did. This gap in my memory is unusual, normally a few chapters in to the sequel and it all comes crashing back. Nevertheless, it stood alone as an engaging read and I only felt like I was missing something at the very end when some characters that probably existed in the rest of the series were mentioned. And some folks will say that "Oh it's too convenient, it all just worked out perfectly in the end." I liked the characters and wanted the best for them, and they all did go through quite a lot to get there. So it was worth it.
