I had high hopes for this book and Arnold did not disappoint. Despite it being outside her usual genre, her signature was stamped all over Midlife Psychic. She grabbed my attention from the start and had me invested in the story and the characters.
Midlife Psychic tells the story of Erin Stone, a 43-year-old divorcee and mother to a nineteen-year-old college student. She is a dispatcher with the Toronto Police Department. Erin grew up in a Catholic household and still holds fast to the teachings. Therefore, she does not believe in the supernatural. Then the unthinkable happened. She woke up from a dream about a plane crash, which in of itself meant nothing. However, when images from a news report about a plane crash mirrored what she saw in her dream, she sensed right away her life would never be the same.
Erin’s reaction to her newfound gift reflected her skepticism about the supernatural world. It took her a while to accept that she did indeed have a psychic vision.
The majority of the story focused on Erin coming to terms with her gift and her acceptance of same. In accepting her gift, she investigates the crash with the help of a National Transport Safety Board (NTSB) Agent. In doing so, she brought danger to her door. The last forty percent of the story was where the suspense took over. It had me on edge.
The secondary characters made things interesting. There is Trish, Erin’s best friend. The one person she can confide in about her gift without being looked upon as crazy. Trish helped her to realize she got this gift for a reason. Then there is David, the NTSB agent. They shared a mutual attraction. It would seem romance is in the air.
The tying up of events in relation to the mystery surrounding the plane crash was told instead of shown. I would prefer show rather than tell.
The ending suggests the possibility of a series, keeping fingers crossed. Overall, Midlife Psychic was an intriguing read. I had a good time seeing how the events played out. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
