I’m not sure I fear Death or the Reaper anymore.

Who would have thought Death wore ball gowns? I had no idea and I can honestly say that I’m now coming to realise that I’m easily influenced. Someone showed me a picture of a bony guy holding a scythe and I never questioned that was what Death looked like. But, then again, I also thought that Death and the Reaper were one and the same. Turns out I got it all wrong. Donna Grant has shown me the errors of my ways and put me on the right track. To be honest, I’m happier with Ms Grant’s version and vision.

I really enjoyed Dark Alpha’s Lover. I have resigned myself to the fact that it may be a wee while before I can go back and read Donna Grant’s backlog. I’ve read a couple of the books in the Dark Kings series and this was my first Reaper but it definitely won’t be my last. I would describe this series as short, sweet and pack a punch. Because of my knowledge gained from reading some of the Dark Kings series, I had no problems following on. To me, this shows the author's talent. There are not too many series where you can follow along and still be engrossed without reading all of what has come before.

We meet Catriona Hayes in Ireland where she owns and runs a café. Catriona is a Halfling, half-Fae. She’s known all her life that she was different from everyone else. Cat had two siblings that were halflings as well but they were killed in unusual circumstances. Her parents are dead, killed years ago in an accident and now all the family she has left is her elderly grandfather. She is sure that her days are numbered because Cat's convinced that the Fae want her dead. Cat will do whatever it takes to keep the last member of her family safe…even face the Reaper.

Fintan is a Reaper and his job working for Death is to keep the balance. He and his fellow Reaper’s work together to make sure that all Fae follow the rules. Fintan and the other Reapers must kill the Fae that breaks the rules but keep themselves a secret too. The Fae talk about Reapers as if they’re unsure they even exist. Young Fae (Dark and Light) are taught that they must follow the rules or the Reaper will punish them.

Now, to be a Reaper, you have to be hand-picked by Death and follow some very strict rules. Fintan has never struggled to follow the rules…until now.

Cat and Fintan are on a mission together. They’re determined to find and kill an ex-Reaper who wants Death and the Reapers annihilated. Together they must learn to trust each other and look within themselves to find the answers to win the battle. Cat must learn to adjust to a new part of herself that has just been awakened. Fintan must learn to move on from the past and let emotions be a part of his future.

Dark Alpha’s Lover is what I call a “get in, do the business, and get out again” kind of story. Introductions are made, storylines are developed quickly and connections form without too much angst. I love these types of stories and, from what I’ve been told, the Reapers is the place to go for more of this type.

I wonder what hope Cael has of ever getting his hands on Death? Will Eoghan survive the beast and return back to the Reapers? I want and need to know more.
