The first thing that stood out to me about this book is that the criticism is more "in your face" than it was in the past novels. Many of the things could be interpreted as criticism on our society but in The Carnivorous Carnival is very upfront and it points out how gruesome society can be without beating round the bush. Big thumbs up for that!
Furthermore, I enjoyed that differentiating between good and bad isn't as easy anymore. At some point not even the Beaudelairs are sure whether they are still "good". It's great how the writer incorporates this little crises everybody goes through at some point in his or her life, doubting your own decisions.
We don't really learn much new stuff about the big mystery, but hey, maybe in the next part: The Slippery Slope.

Another great novel by Lemony Snicket, this time being more direct and even more intense!
