ETA Reread: I remembered a good bit of this book but there was also a lot of little things i didn’t remember (and a few big things at the end). Some of it I ascribed to the second book so I’m not sure I remember that one at all.

This book is dense with story and a ton of things happening. It kind of makes i it feel like a really long book even though it’s not. And it’s got a good bit of character mixed in, enough to draw me along and keep the story interesting. And make me curious about what happens next.

This was an easy book to enjoy. [a:Maria V. Snyder|445303|Maria V. Snyder|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1530814053p2/445303.jpg] fills it with dialog that brings the characters to life, keeps the pace interesting and is fun to read.

I really enjoyed the world and the sense of magic. I liked when it was surprising and how people battled with their magic and augmented it. Really cool stuff.

The characters were a lot of fun; the dynamic between the core group had a great camaraderie that really established their family dynamic. I even really enjoyed the comfortable animosity between Kerrick and Avry.

I'll probably read it again and likely give it four stars then. This time I was just reading so feverishly to see where it all went.
