I was compelled to read this book because I had to know who was orchestrating all the bad things that seemed to happen to Scarlett and Dante. I didn't like the women we meet in this duet when I met them in the first book, but holy hell they were even more hateful than I thought. The culprit behind everything wasn't a surprise because the women is the Devil's concubine, but the path of destruction that she laid, without any remorse was very, very scary. It gave me chills to think that there might really be someone that evil running around, despite this being fiction.

Scarlett and Dante still didn't get much remorse from me. I think part of the problem came from their over the top emotional responses (and not in a good way) to things. They had hair-trigger tempers, used intimate knowledge to manipulate one another and did some pretty petty and horrible things to each other in the name of either protection or hurt feelings. I didn't think there was any possible way for their relationship to be salvaged because they seemed so toxic to one another. But the one thing that Dante seemed to have in spades was faith that somehow he and Scarlett would make it through. And with the number of revelations that came to light, it was surprising that through it all, despite more hurt feelings and tears, Dante was right.

This wasn't my favorite RK Lilley read, but the storyline kept me interested even if I hated the characters most of the time.
