I need to talk about the writing for a moment: I hated it. I absolutely hate switching between first and third person narratives. It just does not work for me and keeps me from staying in the story. I don't care if it's for some dramatic purpose, like detaching yourself from the characters, it's frustrating. I wish authors would choose a narrative and stick with it! I did have to take off a star for this reason, but I'm just glad it didn't flip-flop every other chapter. The story is a solid 4 stars for me, but it took me entirely too long to finish since I could only read a chapter or two at a time.
But back to the story. I was simultaneously disturbed and fascinated. I was disgusted with Caleb, yet I wanted to know more about him. I felt sorry for Livvie, but I wanted to see her pushed to her limits. Needless to say, this caused some very conflicting emotions. Caleb and Livvie are in a huge mess, so I'm glad I have the second part already loaded on my Kindle!
