I've read this seemingly dozens of times over the last seven years with my children. It wasn't until this most recent read with my son (Rascal, 5) that I really thought about or even noticed the cormorant fishing scene. We are reading this story again with the influence of the Beautiful Feet Books Around the World with Picture Books Volume 1.

Reading this again, knowing a little bit more about China had made this much more enjoyable to me. This is a great read aloud and a great story to use as an early reader. Running away won't fix a problem or consequences you must face. This is a neat little story for learning it.

We own a vintage paperback and a hardcover book as well.
