I feel like I should have liked this book a lot more than I did. It has a multiple narrative structure and it's set in Toronto, what about that is not designed to appeal to me specifically? There was just something about the writing style that I didn't connect to, and the dialogue felt very inauthentic to me. Normally after discussing a book or film in class I like it more because I understand better what it's doing - and while I certainly have a better understanding of its complexities, studying it didn't make me actually like it any more. I found it quite flat, overall.
Edit: I'm not going to get into all the issues I had, but I did want to mention that Tuyen's obsession with Carla read less to me as "relatable forbidden lesbian longing" and more "predatory creepy lesbian" trope, which I was not super into. And Oku's obsession with Jackie was just "nice guy"-style creepy.
