IMHO: The Gap year Review

Content Warning: Mother is bi & homophobic when daughter start dating a woman, is manipulative, and self-centered.

  • Friends to lovers trope!

  • The cover is not great (sorry), don't hold that against it!

  • >>>
  • Interesting character dynamics

  • >>>
  • It does feel more like a prequel novella than a full novel, but it's just 99 cents as are the next two released installments.

  • I do wish the first scene was described more. I was at first thinking our protag was a 16 year old girl running away from home after throwing a fit.

After the initial bumpy introduction, it was a fast and interesting ride that I will be continuing.

Angela and Bren are adorable BFF's and the transition to romance was smooth and natural. I appreciate Angela's writings inserted throughout. Especially the last letter!

I love Angela's relationship with the people who raised her and her mother. It's refreshing for a woman character have to get from under her mother's thumb and shadow. I find this and Angela's quest to come into her own at almost thirty really appealing as a struggling millennial.

The bounty hunter board are surprising and fun additions. They open the doors to the wider world in this series that amp up the anticipation to get off planet exploring.

The Gap Year is a solid start to a promising series that gets better with every page. It feels like a good fit for sci-fi adventurers wanting something like lesbian law & order bounty hunting to come.

I don't know about you, but that "Expiry Date" label  to motivate life changes is BRILLIANT. Terrifying, but brilliant. I have such a hard time with cutting down/out sweets and carbs.
