John Constantine, Hellblazer Vol. 1: Original Sins

by Jamie Delano

The very first Hellblazer collection is back in a new edition that includes John Constantine’s early appearances in SWAMP THING #76-77 along with HELLBLAZER #1-9. This is the first of a series of new HELLBLAZER collections that put all his adventures in reading order, capturing Constantine at his youthful, anarchic best.

I had a loose idea about who Constantine is before I picked up the first compilation of comics. Expecting this to be right down my alley, I immediately dove right in.
Turns out, I was right!
The comics are rather dark and gritty. Constantine is definitely a major bastard but it's fun (well, maybe fun is not exactly the correct term) to follow him along. The artwork goes absolutely perfectly with the story and it's one of my favorites so far.
It's a bit of a rocky road to really get into the Hellblazer comics, but after a while, you get sucked in. I appreciate the variety of dark stuff writer Delano has John Constantine dealing with. There are many interesting monsters and demons but also lots of stuff that provides food for thought.
