This was a prequel to a series I believe, and as such was a very short but thrilling read.
The idea of a demonic cursed otherworldly ring, gives me 'the one ring' vibes but in a horror setting, only with its power not to make you invisible but to turn you into a crazy madman who wields fire. Brilliant.
I loved the characters, I was gutted at the loss of some of them, though being a prequel I guess that's to be expected, as it's a backstory.
I loved the setting, royal young men, brothers - one set for the crown, the other set to be chided by his father for wanting to go to war with royal soldiers.
I found I believed the kings intentions to keep them safe, he came across as an overbearing parent after too much loss.
There is however a lot of editing that needs to be done still, as I found numerous grammatical errors. This doesn't take away anything from the book for me, I found it a really enjoyable read. Even if I did have to look some words up thinking I was going crazy because I couldn't place the word, it wasn't until several pages after the best of the bunch that I realised 'ginning' is actually 'grinning' and that just made me chuckle at myself.
